UK commercial metering

A secure data exchange
for energy meter connectivity.

Pelion Meter Exchange opens up the UK metering market, letting meters change hands compliantly, at lower cost, with no site visits and no loss of data.

The problem

Data access is one of the biggest
operational challenges in metering.

Commercial meters change hands constantly. A business switches supplier, and the MOP or DC responsible for that meter changes with it. The meter stays on the wall — but the SIM inside it stays locked to whoever bought the connectivity.

A truck roll for every meter

A perfectly healthy meter needs an engineer on site purely to change a SIM. Across an estate that is the single largest cost of churn, and it buys the customer nothing they can see.

Slow complex data sharing

With no standing arrangement, every handover becomes its own negotiation. Operations waits on commercial, and the meter sits there unread.

Inaccurate, estimated data

Take the meter on without connectivity and you are estimating. Estimates have to be found, corrected and explained — long after the handover is forgotten.

Built to serve

Built for the UK commercial
metering market.

Pelion Meter Exchange serves non-domestic metering estates the companies that install, own and read commercial meters.

Meter Operations

You install and maintain the meter, and usually own the SIM inside it. Hand connectivity over to the incoming operator without sending anyone to site.

Data Collection

You collect and process readings for billing and settlement. Reach every meter you are appointed to through a single connection, with access granted by the owner.

Data Aggregation

You aggregate what the collectors send you and submit it for settlement. When a handover upstream leaves a gap, you inherit it. Pelion Meter Exchange closes it at source.

Pelion Meter Exchange removes the data access lock.

Thousands of UK commercial meters already run on Pelion IoT SIMs. Where both companies are on Pelion Meter Exchange, Pelion transfers the connectivity or data access instantly, with no engineer, and without the meter ever going quiet.

Participation

Two ways to take part.

Full Exchange Access

For companies that own meters.

  • Manage SIMs on Pelion Meter Exchange

  • Grant access to the Data Collectors you appoint

  • Send and receive transfers

Data Collector Access

For companies that only collect readings.

  • Secure VPN Access

  • Read-only collection from meters you are appointed to

  • Controlled entirely by the meter’s current owner

How it works

Join once. Then transfers are
a request, not a project.

Participating companies connect to Pelion Meter Exchange once. After that, connectivity & data moves between participants with near instant access, delivering seamless data collection.

Throughout all of it, the meter keeps transmitting. No site visit. No SIM swap. No gap in readings.

Join Pelion Meter Exchange

Once, at the start:

  • Sign a Pelion Sales Order
  • Your SIM estate is enrolled
  • Connect over encrypted VPN

Transfer the connectivity

When a meter moves:

  • Either side submits a request
  • Pelion verifies and confirms
  • Billing switches on the agreed date

Grant read-only access

When a DC is appointed:

  • The owner authorises the DC
  • Read-only collection, nothing more
  • The owner can revoke at any time

The technical detail

Each participant terminates one encrypted connection into Pelion Meter Exchange. Entitlement is held centrally and enforced by Pelion, and readings never touch the public internet.

How participants connect to Pelion Meter Exchange Non-domestic AMR meters with Pelion SIMs send readings over the mobile network on a private APN into Pelion Meter Exchange. The Exchange holds SIM ownership and transfer, owner-granted access control, encrypted routing, and the portal and APIs, which carry connectivity records only. Pelion is a conduit: it routes readings and never reads or alters them. Each participant connects through one IPSec VPN: the owning participant, the incoming owner, and Data Collectors with read-only access. One IPSec VPN per participant

A single tunnel covers the whole estate, however large.

Private APN end to end

There is no route to the meter from the public internet.

Access stays with the owner

Only the company currently responsible for a SIM can grant anyone else access to it.

No participant sees another’s estate

Access exists only where it has been explicitly granted.

Why use Pelion Meter Exchange?

No engineer, no SIM swap

Connectivity transfers in days, not a truck roll per meter.

No contract friction

A transferred SIM is billable from day one under pre-agreed terms, with no amendment or negotiation per transfer.

Continuity of readings

The meter keeps transmitting throughout the transfer, so settlement and billing data never gaps.

Neutral and secure

Pelion operates Pelion Meter Exchange as an independent connectivity provider: encrypted connections, access controlled by the meter’s owner, and Pelion never reads or alters meter data.

Built on scale

Pelion manages around 1.8 million connected devices, and Pelion Meter Exchange builds on SIM estates already deployed in UK meters.

Secure 3rd party access

Pelion Meter Exchange allows for smart meter owners to provide 3rd party access to their data, helping comply with data and regulatory requests.
