Automation of alerting for IoT (Internet of Things) device behaviour is a critical aspect of ensuring the proper functioning and security of your IoT ecosystem. IoT devices are interconnected devices that communicate over the internet, and monitoring alerts help you detect and respond to issues, anomalies, or security threats in near-real-time. Our connectivity platform presents a secured gateway to configure and monitor alert rules based on your defined thresholds.
Monitoring Alerts ensure that your monitoring solution can handle the scale of your IoT deployment. As the number of devices increase, your monitoring infrastructure should be able to accommodate the additional load. Automated alerting allows peace of mind for you as the customer when many devices are active, the Pelion alerting system can show one or many company members unexpected device behaviour and/or keep your charges under control.
Proactive Problem Detection: Monitoring Alerts play a pivotal role in detecting anomalies or potential issues with devices. By being informed in near-real-time of unexpected data usage either high or low, businesses can swiftly address any emerging problems before they escalate.
Data Charge Control: Monitoring your data usage does not exceed what you expect can ward off unexpected charges outside of your chosen tariff.
Customisability: Pelion understands that not all businesses are the same. Therefore, users can set up alerts on their own using the platform. They can specify the criteria and thresholds which, when breached, will trigger an alert, ensuring that the alerts are tailored to the specific needs of the business.
Pelion Monitoring Alerts are rules that can be set up so that they are notified by email when subscribers have exceeded a defined data usage threshold. Each rule contains an “upper” and “lower” data threshold with a notification email being sent when either is exceeded. Many “alertees” can be subscribed to these alert emails where an internal Pelion service is responsible for gathering data transit information over our network and sending out these emails.
This functionality allows users to:
Set lower and upper data usage limits at which monitoring alert notifications will be triggered.
Define data usage limits on a company-wide, group or subscriber-by-subscriber basis.
Nominate monitoring alert recipients, who will be notified by email when data usage thresholds are reached.
There are four levels of monitoring alerts within our Connectivity Management:
Company level alerts.
Device group level alerts.
Individual device level alerts.
Device monitoring alert
The table below defines the types of monitoring alerts which are possible to configure within the Pelion Connectivity Management (PCM) Platform and outlines the differences between each type of alert.
| Monitoring Alert
| Description
|
| Company monitoring alert
| This is a global alert that applies to every device in the account. A company monitoring alert will be triggered should any device in the account exceed the defined usage thresholds.
|
| Aggregated device group monitoring alert
| This alert applies to the combined data usage total of all the devices in a device group. An aggregated device group monitoring alert will be triggered if the combined total data usage of the devices in a group exceeds the defined usage thresholds.
|
| Individual device group monitoring alert
| This alert applies to every device in a device group. An individual device group monitoring alert will be triggered if any device within the group exceeds the defined usage thresholds.
|
| Device monitoring alert
| This alert only applies to a specific device. A device monitoring alert will be triggered only if the specific device the alert relates to exceeds the defined usage thresholds. |
Here are some of the many reasons our customers report our real time data alerting beneficial to their business:
A customer in the energy market with thousands of devices expected to come online each day and use a low amount of data will get alerted when their device does not hit a certain number of megabytes, telling them a problem device has not come online that day.
A customer with an inclusive data bundle uses alerting company wide to know when they have used 80% of their data and can buy more, avoiding unforeseen charges.
A customer using alerting on a roaming SIM notices patterns of high data that they would not expect allowing them to troubleshoot which problem IPs their SIM is talking to across the world.
One team within a company monitors a subset of devices and so has set up alerting themselves for specific SIMs to focus on their own project.
Pelion’s Monitoring Alerts are a feature of our connectivity platform that ensures businesses remain continuously informed of their IoT operations. Maintaining an awareness of your subscriber behaviour and the costs incurred, allow for making more informed decisions of your chosen tariffs and device data transmission behaviour.
